Our Medical Day Unit (MDU) delivers various nurse led treatments and investigations that are planned and non-urgent. We also deliver a variety of intravenous injections, paracentesis (where a needle is inserted into the abdomen to remove fluid), diagnostics and lumbar punctures.
You may also attend MDU to finish a course of treatment after you have been discharged from hospital.
MDU is open 8am – 4pm 7 days a week. Excluding bank holidays.
What happens when I arrive to MDU?
We ask you to report to Reception on arrival where your details will be confirmed.
You will be led to a chair space where you will stay for the duration of the treatment. You may be treated in a space with male and females. Any issues or concerns regarding this can be brought up with staff either on the day of attendance or in advance whereby we will try our best to accommodate your wishes.
Please can we ask that if you have any type of infection or any recent contact with others that have had an infection, please don’t attend the unit. This includes contact or recent diarrhoea and vomiting.
If you have to cancel your appointment, we ask that you call reception as soon as possible so we can re allocate your slot. You will be re-booked into the next available slot when you are well enough to attend.
Will I be able to speak to a doctor when I come in?
As this is a nurse-led service, access to your consultant on the day is not available. Should there be any questions regarding your treatment we ask, where possible, that you discuss this directly with your consultant first. We have access to members of your consultant’s team but only in emergencies.
What happens after my treatment?
Depending on your treatment you will be able to leave shortly after your treatment has finished. Subject to the type of treatment you have had there may be a period of observation required before you are discharged. The Nursing staff will advise you on the day. If you require a further appointment, this will be made by the nursing staff before you are discharged home. If you required any further follow up with your GP the nursing team will inform you before you leave.
Visiting
Due to the type of patients the unit sees and capacity we request at this present time patients attend alone for treatment.
Refreshments
Refreshments are available at any time, although soup and sandwiches are served at midday. Special diets can be catered for, please inform the nurse on your arrival.
