Acute medical unit (AMU)

The acute medical unit is a 50 bedded admissions and assessment unit with one GP assessment room. The aim of care on the unit is to assess, treat and discharge or transfer patients to wards appropriate for their needs.

Referrals to AMU are made via A&E, SPL, Beacon Centre and clinics. Therefore, if your GPs has referred you with a medical condition requiring admission then this is where you will be sent.

Once you have been referred you will be added to our bed waiting list. We priorities getting the sickest patients into a bed, this doesn’t mean your treatment will be delayed. You will still see a doctor in a timely matter.

With only having one phone line we get a high volume of calls 24/7 so it can be difficult to get through to the unit. Please be patient and your call will be answered   as soon as possible.

Visiting Times: Visitors are welcome between 10am to 8pm seven days a week.

Number of visitors to a bed: For the safety and comfort of all our patients we restrict visitors to two at a time, but do ask the nursing team if more visitors need to come in. No children under 11 allowed unless it has been discussed with the nursing team.
