Hope Somerset Service

Mindfulness and Compassion’ programme

What is mindfulness

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we are doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

About the programme

The programme is run by ‘Hope Somerset’ and has been specifically designed for people living with or beyond a cancer diagnosis. It is led by qualified Mindfulness and Compassion practitioners, trained by ‘Mindfulness UK’.

The programme will explore mindfulness techniques and ideas to help manage the impact cancer can have on individuals’ lives. The group is designed to teach new skills and is not group therapy.

When and where

The programme will take place weekly, for 1 hour, for 8 weeks.

It will be run online via a video conference link, with up to 12 participants. In order to gain the full benefit of the programme, you will need to be able to attend and commit to all 8 weeks.

Who can attend the programme

The programme is open to patients within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, who have been given a cancer diagnosis, going through treatment or recovering from treatment, or living beyond cancer.

You will need to be able to commit to 30 minutes home practice daily in between sessions.

Please note we would not recommend the programme if you have only just received a diagnosis, currently experiencing significant emotional distress, or if you are experiencing side effects of treatment which could affect your ability to attend regularly.
