The learning disability liaison team within the acute hospitals are here to help anyone with a learning disability over the age of 18 to access our services. We can support with:

  • an outpatient appointment
  • an acute admission
  • a planned procedure

A learning disability is defined by Mencap as a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities – for example household tasks, socialising or managing money – which affects someone for their whole life.  People with a learning disability tend to take longer to learn and may need support to develop new skills, understand complicated information and interact with other people.  Please see more information at What is a learning disability? – Mencap or Learning disabilities: what is it? – National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)

We can discuss making reasonable adjustments so that the person with a learning disability is able to access health services that they require when in our hospitals.

We can assist with making reasonable adjustments around a number of areas, including:

  • communication
  • best interest decisions
  • capacity and understanding
  • eating and drinking needs
  • mobility
  • sensory issues
  • appointment arrangements
  • liaising with other professionals, carers and family
