Smoking in Pregnancy

During pregnancy smoking and breathing in “secondhand” is bad for you and your baby. They can cause problems like:

  • Miscarriage
  • Ectopic pregnancy (baby growing outside the womb)
  • Stillbirth (baby dying before or at birth)
  • Baby born with problems, like cleft lip and palate
  • Baby not growing well and having health issues
  • Bleeding during the last months of pregnancy (called abruption)
  • Having your baby too early (before 37 weeks)
  • Sudden and unexplained death (SIDS)

Stopping smoking during pregnancy is one of the best things you can do for you, your baby and your family, even though it can be really hard.

Remember you do not have to do it alone. You can get understanding, non-judgemental support for you and the people in your life.

If you smoke our ‘smoke free families’ team will contact you to tell you what they can do to support you. You can talk to your midwife or consultant/doctor at any time about the support that is available.

Our specialist smoking in pregnancy service is available to all pregnant smokers who live in Somerset. Partners and significant others can also be supported.
