If you have a healthy pregnancy and you haven’t started labour by 41 weeks, you’ll see your midwife to talk about what to do next. She might offer to do a “membrane sweep.” This is when a consultant/doctor or midwife puts two fingers inside your cervix and gently moves it around the baby’s head area to start labour. It can be a bit uncomfortable and there might be some bleeding, which is normal.
This can sometimes help start the birth process within 24 hours.
Your midwife will also suggest a day for you to come in and get help starting your labour (induction of labour). This usually happens by the time you’re a bit more than 41 weeks pregnant.
