Nutrition for wound healing

Pressure injuries or pressure ulcers are an injury that breaks down the skin.  This can be due to pressure on the skin or sometime rubbing against it.

There are a different reasons for why someone may develop a pressure injury.  The risk of pressure injury development increases with both underweight and overweight and poor food and fluid intake may increase the risk of development further.

Once a pressure ulcer has developed, nutrition and hydration play an important role in wound healing and, this can often mean an increase in energy (calories) and protein together with vitamins, minerals and fluid.

The British Dietetics Association food fact sheet: Prevention and management of pressure injuries explains this further.

Protein is a key nutrient involved in wound healing and found in meat, fish, eggs, milk and dairy foods along with plant based sources such as nuts, meat alternatives and plant based milk, cheeses and yogurts.
