Patient Testimonial
I can now walk up hills and stairs without being short of breath. I’ve not had one episode of restless legs which was a regular occurrence for me. My nails are as strong as anything after being brittle for years and I’ve got so much more energy
Self referrals are now accepted, please complete the online form at the bottom of the page.
The impact of iron deficiency
Iron deficiency is a problem which can profoundly affect people’s lives. Iron deficiency is present in the vast majority of cases of anaemia; however it can be under-treated.
Iron deficiency is frequently highlighted with other co-morbidities, for example long term autoimmune inflammatory conditions, diabetes, heart and kidney disease.
As well as causing a reduction in the quality of life for the patient, iron deficiency significantly impacts other co-morbidities and could delay planned surgery. Iron deficiency increases the risk of stroke, the risk of falls and delays the healing process.
Iron deficiency will reduce the ability and prevent the inclination to exercise for weight loss and cardiac health.
Not only does iron deficiency have an impact on physical health, but also on mental health. Iron deficiency causes low mood, depression and fatigue. It can lead to reduction in the ability to work and socialise. It can also cause hair thinning and restless legs.
Requesting a referral to the Iron Clinic
Correcting iron deficiency is simple and quick. Please ensure that the following blood samples have been taken within the previous month:
- FBC
- Haematinics (folate, ferritin & B12)
- Transferrin Saturation if there are any inflammatory conditions, high BMI, alcoholism, kidney or heart disease etc.
Alternatively, these tests can be arranged by the clinic at an additional cost.
Review and treatment
Following a full review of your blood results, you will receive a telephone call. This telephone appointment will include discussions of the possible treatment options.
If it is agreed that an iron infusion would be beneficial, this will be arranged to take place in a private outpatient room in the Kingston Wing, Yeovil Hospital at a date and time to fit in with your diary.
The iron infusion procedure will take a little over an hour.
Prices
Consultation £200

Please note, investigations for the underlying cause of iron deficiency is not the responsibility of the iron clinic and is not part of the service offered.

Information about cataract surgery and what we offer
When is cataract surgery recommended?
As you get into older age it is normal to have minor cloudiness of the lens. However significant cloudiness or cataracts can slowly worsen and at this point surgery to remove the damaged lens is the only way to restore your normal vision. In many cases it is not necessary to have cataract surgery if your vision is not significantly affected. For example, if you are still able to carry out everyday tasks like reading and recognising faces without significant difficulty.
What’s involved in the cataract operation?
In comparison to many other surgical procedures cataract surgery is relatively straightforward. The full procedure will typically take between 30 and 45 minutes. You will be given a local anaesthetic, which means you will recover faster and be able to go home on the same day as the operation. The surgery involves removing the damaged lens from your eye. When the lens has been removed, the surgeon inserts a small plastic lens, called an intraocular implant, also known as an intraocular lens. Once the procedure is complete you are taken to a ward so you can recover before leaving the hospital later that day.
Where will the procedure take place?
You will have a pre-assessment appointment with your consultant at either Yeovil Hospital or the Yeatman Hospital in Sherborne and if you require a cataract operation you will be operated on at the Yeatman Hospital. Follow-up appointments will usually be held at the Yeatman too.
Who will complete the surgery on my cataracts?
The surgery will be completed by one of our experienced ophthalmology consultants. Mr and Mrs Shah are a husband and wife team, they both offer private cataract surgery via the Kingston Wing at Yeovil Hospital and at The Yeatman Hospital in Dorset. Mr Paritosh Shah and Mrs Brinda Shah, bring with them a wealth of experience. Mr Paritosh Shah joined Yeovil from Moorfields Eye Hospital having completed a fellowship in Medical retina and inflammatory eye disease. Mrs Brinda Shah joined us from King’s Hospital in London and her special interest is glaucoma. Arthrographic Shoulder Distension for frozen shoulder
We now offer this much less invasive, yet very effective procedure than the alternative surgical option.
Richard Clarkson, Consultant Radiologist who performs this procedure says:
I have used this technique since arriving in Yeovil over 11 years ago and it has revolutionised treatment of frozen shoulders (adhesive capsulitis) locally and is now the first line of intervention.
The technique involves a three-pronged approach of: firstly distending the tight capsule with a combination of long acting local anaesthetic and air once dye has been injected and is shown using x-ray to be within the joint; secondly by then also injecting a dose of steroid into the joint; and thirdly through physio to maximise the effects and keep the released and often pain free joint moving.
Previous audits performed by both Radiology and Physiotherapy departments have shown 9 out of 10 patients have significantly reduced or no pain and much better movement post treatment and further treatment is not usually required.
